Every home needs fire alarms installed to ensure you and your family’s safety.  It is important that you know where to have fire alarms installed throughout your home for optimal performance.

Where to Install Fire Alarms in Your Home

Every level of your home should have a working fire alarm, including the basement.  There should also be a fire alarm in every bedroom, as well as one in the hallway outside of each bedroom.

When your fire alarms are installed, be sure to have a notification sounder (siren) installed, so everyone will be alerted if an alarm is set off.   Fire alarms should be positioned high up on walls or on ceilings. Alarms mounted on the wall need to be installed 4 to 12 inches away from the ceiling, and alarms mounted on the ceiling should be a minimum of 4 inches from the nearest wall.  If your ceiling is vaulted, the fire alarm should be installed near the highest point.  It is important to install fire alarms away from anything that may prevent them from operating correctly, such as windows, doors, or air ducts.

Some extra features you might want to consider when choosing a fire alarm for your home are flashing lights and vibration.  If there is someone who is hard of hearing or deaf in your home, this will ensure they will wake up to an alarm.

Be sure to have battery backups for each fire alarm in your house. This will ensure that the alarm can still go off in the event of a power outage. The importance of having working fire alarms in your home cannot be stressed enough!
