Home Security Mistakes to Avoid

Our team at Carolina Security Technologies has extensive experience in the security industry, and over the years, we have seen our fair share of security mistakes. In this article, we will go over some of the most common mistakes people make when it comes to home security to help you avoid making the same errors.

  • Hiding a Key Outside- One of the most common home security mistakes that we see is hiding a key outside the home. While doing this may offer a convenient way to get back inside in case you accidentally lock yourself out, it also offers potential intruders an easy way to access your home. It’s not hard for intruders to guess where your key might be hidden, and all it takes is a few minutes of searching around the entryway to find the key under your mat, in your planter, or under a rock. If you are worried about locking yourself out, we recommend installing a keypad lock instead.
  • Neglecting the Second Story- Another common mistake that people make when it comes to home security is neglecting to lock their second story windows or balcony doors. If an intruder is determined, they can get up to that level and used those unlocked entrances to get inside, so we recommend that you keep all your doors and windows locked tight.
  • Leaving Obvious Signs That You Are Gone- A third common home security mistake is making it obvious when you are away on vacation—for example, leaving the house dark for an extended period, letting mail pile up, etc. If you are planning to travel, we recommend having the post office hold your mail, installing a light timer, and asking a neighbor to check up on the place periodically. Even better, you can hire a house sitter.
